A Summary of the Book of Revelation
Unveiling the Triumph of the King
This is a chapter-by-chapter overview focusing on the main signal and flow of events in the final book of the Bible.
Part 1: The Things Which Are (Chapters 1–3)
The Message to the Church on Earth
- Chapter 1: The Vision of the Risen Christ. John receives a glorious vision of the resurrected and glorified Jesus Christ, who commands him to write what he sees. It establishes Jesus' authority and love for His churches.
- Chapters 2–3: The Letters to the Seven Churches. Jesus dictates seven specific letters to seven real churches in Asia Minor. Each letter contains commendation for their strengths, correction for their failings, and a promise to the one who "overcomes." This is the final message to the Church in the "Church Age."
Part 2: The Heavenly Throne Room (Chapters 4–5)
The Scene Shifts to Heaven Before the Judgment
- Chapter 4: The Throne of God. John is taken up to heaven and sees a vision of God's throne room. The scene is one of constant, unending worship, establishing God's absolute sovereignty and holiness before any judgment begins.
- Chapter 5: The Lamb and the Scroll. A scroll with seven seals, representing the title deed to the earth and the plan of judgment, is presented. No one in creation is worthy to open it, causing great sorrow. Then, the Lamb who was slain (Jesus) appears, and He alone is worthy. Heaven erupts in praise, celebrating the Redeemer. The Church is seen here as part of the worshipping elders.
Part 3: The Tribulation (Chapters 6–18)
The Unsealing of God's Wrath on Earth
- Chapter 6: The First Six Seals. The Lamb begins to open the seals. The first four release the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Antichrist, war, famine, death). The fifth seal reveals the martyrs of the Tribulation crying out for justice. The sixth seal unleashes a catastrophic global earthquake and cosmic disturbances.
- Chapter 7: The Sealing of the 144,000. Before the final seal is opened, God seals 144,000 Jewish evangelists who will be protected to preach the Gospel during the Tribulation. John also sees a vast, uncountable multitude of saved Tribulation saints from every nation worshipping in heaven.
- Chapters 8–9: The Seven Trumpets. The seventh seal is opened, revealing seven trumpet judgments. These are a series of devastating plagues that are more intense and supernatural than the seal judgments, including hail and fire, a meteor hitting the sea, demonic locusts, and a massive demonic army.
- Chapter 10: The Little Scroll. A mighty angel gives John a small scroll to eat. It tastes sweet in his mouth (the good news of God's plan) but is bitter in his stomach (the sorrow of the judgment it contains).
- Chapter 11: The Two Witnesses. Two powerful, God-sent prophets appear in Jerusalem, preaching and performing miracles for 1,260 days. They are killed by the Beast (Antichrist) but are resurrected and ascend to heaven, causing great fear.
- Chapter 12: The Cosmic Conflict. A symbolic history of the conflict between Satan (the dragon) and Israel (the woman who gives birth to the male child, Christ). It shows Satan's rebellion, his war against Christ, and his fury being directed at the Jewish people during the Tribulation.
- Chapter 13: The Two Beasts. The two main human figures of the Tribulation are revealed: the Beast from the Sea (the Antichrist, a charismatic world dictator) and the Beast from the Earth (the False Prophet, a religious leader who causes the world to worship the Antichrist and take his mark).
- Chapter 14: Glimpses of the End. A series of visions showing the 144,000 with the Lamb on Mount Zion, angels proclaiming the final Gospel message, and a preview of the final judgment, pictured as a great winepress of God's wrath.
- Chapters 15–16: The Seven Bowls of Wrath. The final, most intense series of judgments. Seven bowls of God's undiluted wrath are poured out upon the earth in rapid succession, culminating in the battle of Armageddon.
- Chapters 17–18: The Fall of Babylon. An angel reveals the nature and judgment of "Mystery, Babylon," a symbol for the corrupt world system of false religion (Chapter 17) and commerce (Chapter 18). Its sudden, catastrophic destruction is described.
Part 4: The Second Coming & The Millennium (Chapters 19–20)
The Triumphant Return of the King
- Chapter 19: The Marriage Supper & The Return. Heaven rejoices over Babylon's fall. The "marriage of the Lamb" is announced. Then, the heavens open, and Jesus Christ returns to earth in glorious power with the armies of heaven (the Church). He defeats the Beast and his armies with a word from His mouth.
- Chapter 20: The 1,000-Year Reign & Final Judgment. Satan is bound and thrown into the abyss for 1,000 years. The saints rule and reign with Christ on earth for this Millennial Kingdom. After the 1,000 years, Satan is released for a final, brief rebellion and is defeated for good. This is followed by the Great White Throne Judgment, where all the wicked dead of all ages are judged and cast into the lake of fire.
Part 5: The Eternal State (Chapters 21–22)
The Ultimate "Welcome is Home"
- Chapter 21: The New Heaven and New Earth. The old, sin-cursed creation is gone. God creates a new heaven and a new earth. The New Jerusalem, the holy city, descends from heaven, prepared as a bride for her husband. God Himself dwells with humanity, and there is no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.
- Chapter 22: The River of Life & The Final Invitation. A description of the eternal city, with the river of the water of life and the tree of life. The book ends with a final, open invitation from the Spirit and the Bride for all who are thirsty to come and take the water of life freely. It concludes with a promise and a warning: "He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus."
